Assault Hotline - You can play an active role in increasing the safety of yourself and the people you care about. There is no way to eliminate the possibility of something happening, but there are strategies that can reduce your risk or give you the confidence to take steps to prevent sexual assault.
Sexual assault is a heinous crime - a hostile attack - an attempt to inflict pain and shame. It is not the result of "uncontrollable lust." Sexual abuse can happen to anyone. It can happen anywhere, anytime, in public or in your home, day or night.

The perpetrator is not necessarily a stranger. In fact, in more than a third of the reported cases, the crime was committed by an acquaintance, neighbor, friend, or relative of the victim. Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes. Most offenders will continue to commit crimes until they are caught, so it is important to report sexual assault to the authorities.

Consent is an agreement between the participants in a sexual activity. Consent must be expressed openly and freely. Verbalizing and affirming your consent will help you and your partner understand and respect each other's boundaries.
A minor who is drunk, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or who is asleep or unconscious cannot give consent. If someone consents to an act under threat or intimidation, it is not considered consent because it was not freely given. Uneven power dynamics, such as having sex with a staff member or student, mean that consent cannot be given freely.
Rape can happen in any situation, and it's never your fault. However, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim by taking steps such as avoiding travel and alcohol and drug use. There were many beatings in and near the victim's home.
Do not go to danger. Be careful of the people around you and those around you, especially if you are alone or in the dark. If you need help, know where to get it.
