Assault Horse - The Triple Crown is a series of thoroughbred races for three-year-old horses held annually in May and early June. Horse racing's Triple Crown is considered one of the most difficult accomplishments in horse racing, perhaps all of sports championships. The tough schedule calls for the three-year-old to win the Kentucky Derby, then win the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, then the Belmont Stakes three weeks later. In the entire history of the race, only thirteen horses have won the triple crown.
One of three Triple Crown winners to win the Kentucky Derby, Assault had one of the longest racing careers (42 starts) of 13 series sweepers. Diagnosed as sterile after retiring at the age of five, she returned to training and racing until she was seven.

Bred and ridden by Robert Kleberg King Ranch Texas, Assault won the stakes as a two-year-old. He began his 3-year-old campaign with back-to-back stakes wins, including the Memorial Wood, but finished fourth in the Derby four days before the Kentucky Derby.

Although he suffered a permanently damaged hoof from an arena accident as a young horse, Assault rarely gave in to it or any other ailments. He won the Kentucky Derby by a record-tying eight lengths, won the Preakness by a neck, and then won the Belmont Stakes by a more comfortable margin of three lengths, all in four weeks.
The son of Bold Venture suffered a six-race defeat in the summer and autumn of 1946, but bounced back to beat the older horse twice and was voted Horse of the Year. He was also a top-class 4-year-old, winning his first five starts but losing by eight lengths in the autumn of 1947 against the famous horse.
Trained by Max Hirsch, Assault won only one stakes, the 1949 Brooklyn Handicap, before retiring second and last in 1950.
