Fighter Jet Nyc
With three major airports in their metropolitan area, New Yorkers are used to hearing jet engines, if they pay attention at all, over other noisy city sounds. But this week they heard a different noise, louder than that of a plane. A constant hum from above, louder than the daily flights to and from LaGuardia, JFK and Newark.
Remembering The Defenders: North America's Military Response To 9/11
This is the sound of US Air Force F-15 and F-16 fighter jets patrolling the skies above the metropolis as the United Nations General Assembly continues. This annual event, held every September, brings the leaders of the 193 member states of the United Nations to New York, hosting powerful people, the world's best, for several days.
The center of Manhattan, where the headquarters of the United Nations and many hotels where the representatives of the country live, is becoming the most interesting target for terrorists. This is where the US government comes in.
From Sept. 21-29, while leaders are in town, FAA restricts airspace over Midtown; private planes and drones are not allowed in this area. However, there is always the possibility that the plane will enter a restricted area or that it will be flown by someone with less than good intentions. A monitoring mission belonging to the Air Force.
They surround the city at a high altitude and are warriors - always flying in pairs - ready to attack and escort any attackers. (We asked the USAF for more details about the mission, but had not heard back by press time.)

Jet fighters are relatively small and fly patrols at 24,000 feet or more, making them very difficult to see with the naked eye. You're more likely to see aerial refueling ships, which are kept in the air by in-flight refueling. At any time while on patrol, the tanker goes around the city waiting for the fighters to occasionally come to it for gas. You can track it with special flight trackers, and with a lens big enough for your camera, you can even photograph it.
This Boeing KC-135, the military version of the long-retired 707, was shot down over Brooklyn on Tuesday morning.
The tanker would spend the morning in a racing pattern over the city and could be tracked by the ADS-B Exchange tracking system. (Flight tracking websites common to commercial aircraft, such as Flightradar24, often hide military aircraft. Fighters are often nowhere to be found.)
The patrols do not disrupt scheduled commercial flights, at least according to an Air Force statement to the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. Checks on flight-tracking websites this week confirmed that planes are departing and landing at New York airport as usual, on regular routes . Fighters also fly at subsonic speeds, so they don't create sonic booms that can scare people and break windows.
Why Are Fighter Jets In The Skies Over New York City This Week?
Of course, seeing such an unusual event in New York doesn't happen often. In addition to the United Nations session, other events also confirm this type of air defense.
Since the election of Donald Trump as president, patrols have flown into his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. During his visit to New York in 2015, Pope Francis also received a US Air Force security detail in the sky. In recent years, jet fighters have been seen in the capital area during the Fourth of July holiday, such as in 2017 when an F-16 was photographed taking gas from a KC-10 tank.
How much is this costing taxpayers? According to the Department of Defense, the KC-135 costs about $13,000 per flight hour, while the F-16 costs about $8,000, to the nearest thousand. So keeping a tank and two fighters on patrol 24/7 for one week will cost $4.9 million. This does not include any part of the F-15s, which cost $21,000 an hour, as they are larger and more complex than the F-16 and older, resulting in higher maintenance costs.
But you don't have to crane your neck to see an interesting plane coming into town for a UN meeting. World leaders fly to New York in aircraft befitting their status, usually VIP military jets or commercial jets chartered for the occasion, and often land at JFK or Newark. So if you're flying into that airport this week, keep your eyes open and you might catch a glimpse of Air Force One.
