"It took a lot of planning and coordination, but we finally have everything in one building," said Charles "Wes" Smith, Fort Meade's director of human resources. "From ID cards to transportation arrangements, we can do it all for you in building 4550."
Located at the end of MacGlachlin Parade Field on Parade Field Lane, the red brick facade of 4550, which serves as the backdrop for the installation's main flagpole, is easily recognizable.
"Not only is it hard to miss, but it's big enough to accommodate all the offices we need to provide all the services our clients need," Smith said. "It will make the provision of these services more efficient and it will make it easier to coordinate our services internally so we are all on the same page."
The first office to move into was one that almost every person in Fort Mead had to visit at least once. The identity card office started moving at the end of January. The move was halted for a day while Plexiglas signs were installed at customer service workstations. Since then, the ID office has been functioning as expected.

The remaining One Stop offices will be moved in the coming weeks. From February 12, 2021, all offices will be moved in the one stop scheme. Due to COVID, some are still working virtually.
To ensure visitors find the office and support they need, efforts are being made to develop a color-coded directory of buildings to guide people to the offices they need.
"It's a big building," Smith said. "It's hard to find your way around. Soon you'll find directories at major intersections to identify the main departments and offices that our customers need.
"If you're new, you may not be aware of the history of the installation," said Ben Rogers, the garrison's public affairs specialist. "We have several projects underway to beautify the building to make it feel welcoming to newcomers."

As is the problem with most places around the accommodation, parking comes at a price. In Building 4550, parking is permitted along Parade Field Lane, which runs north and south in front of the building. The curved driveway at the main entrance will be converted into spaces for the disabled. All designated spaces behind the building will be moved back to the space between the One Stop building and the Garrison HQ building.
In addition to the Human Resources offices at Fort Meade, the 4550th also houses the Directorate of Family and Morale, the Offices of Welfare and Recreation, and the offices of the Baltimore Recruiting Battalion. It hosts a diverse group of approximately 120 partner agencies, including the US Cyber Command, the National Security Agency, the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Defense Media Activity, the Defense Courier Service, the Environmental Protection Agency Science Center, the Defense Information School, and the United States Field Band.

Prospective military personnel should contact their individual commands and units and their sponsor for branch-specific orientation information.
Military personnel will attend a mandatory five-day processing meeting upon arrival on post. This process will comprehensively address military fitness training, sponsorship, personnel, finance, transportation, medical and dental issues. Service members will also attend a newcomer orientation where they will receive orientation about the installation's support services. Spouses are encouraged to attend this orientation. The town of Laurel is west of the post office in Prince George's County. Around 25,600 people live in it. The city is also home to Laurel Park Horse Racing; historic sites such as Montpelier Manor; and the National Wildlife Visitor Center, the largest science and environmental education center in the Department of the Interior.
Columbia, in Howard County, is northwest of Fort Meade. This unincorporated community has a population of nearly 100,000. The region is home to an ideal mix of urban and suburban living with a vibrant city and lake region and many parks.
