410 Ammunition Shortage - Gunners are at a point where they're running low on ammo when they'll be happy to have something - anything - to shoot. What started as a depression caused by COVID has turned into the worst shortage of bullets in recent memory, and industry benefactors expect it to last until the end of the year.
Hunters and shooters looking for a box of their favorite things are having a hard time finding their fix, but all is not lost. We scoured the Internet and talked to gun dealers and manufacturers to find the hardest and easiest cartridges to buy right now—and the results may surprise you.
410 Ammunition Shortage
Everything is hard to come by now, from shotgun shells to hunting rounds to football bullets. If you are looking for it, you will have a hard time getting your hands on it. Hornady tells us that every bullet they make is on back order, and Brownells says most of their bullets sell out within an hour.
A Guide To Choosing The Best Handgun Cartridge
We began by taking a close look at five of the largest firearms retailers on the Internet: Midway USA, Brownells, Natchez Shooter's Supply, Outdoor Sporting Goods Store, and Palmetto State Firearms. There are others, but these are the top five (and they use search engines that are easy to find).
We start by comparing the ratio of the number of available SKUs (in-stock units) to the out-of-stock SKUs. Basically, this tells us what percentage of the retailer's total product selection is rifle, handgun, rimfire, and shotgun ammunition.
Shotgun ammunition is the most commonly available. On average across the five brokers, they had 3.5% of all their options in stock when we checked last week. If you think that's scary, it gets worse. Only 2% of handgun ammo was found, 1.7% of rifle ammo, and 1.2% of rimfire ammunition.
Statistics are moving so fast that these measurements may be slightly different today. But if you're looking for a specific type of weapon, a center gun is your best bet.
Do Shotgun Shells Go Bad?
Next, we looked at the top five cartridges with the most SKUs available on each website. If you're looking for one case of each specific card, this tells us what you're likely to get. Surprisingly, cartridges like .223 Rem., 9mm, and .22 LR were in the top five at almost every retailer.
For pistol ammunition, the .223 Rem. It was the top cartridge at Midway USA and Sportsman's Superstore, and the fifth most popular cartridge in Natchez. Nine millimeters is the largest card at Midway and Sportsman's, and the second most common at Palmetto State and Brownells.
The .22 LR is still available at Palmetto State, Natchez, and Sportsman's, and the 12-gauge birdshot can be found at Palmetto State, Natchez, and Midway.
You'll pay through the nose for each of these boxes, and you may only get one box of what you're looking for. But the most popular cartridges can be found online.
Many Sportsmen Forced To Hunt For Ammo This Fall In Pennsylvania
The remaining cartridges in the top five lists of each retailer are what you would expect due to scarcity. You can still find .416 Rigby and .458 Lott, for example, and the 10mm is the most popular handgun cartridge in the Palmetto State and Natchez.
The bottom line? As a rule, the easiest cartridges to find are the most popular - and the most expensive.
.224 Valkyrie is an exception to this rule. While the Valkyrie is neither popular nor expensive, every retailer except Natchez lists the .224 in the top five SKUs available. We look at the same point in time, so our opinion may be different two weeks or two months from now. As a good example, we recently heard that Natchez was selling 1,000 cases of 9mm for $0.55 a round, but when we checked, the only handgun ammunition was 10mm and .357 Sig in stock.
Ammunition Shortage Still Impacting Local Gun Stores, Hunters 2 Years Later
"Higher performance, .223 Rem., 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win., if you're just looking for a box, yes, this is probably the easiest thing to find because it's pushed in books like this," said Seth Swerczek, Hornady communications manager.
As for the larger and/or more expensive cartridges, Swerczek hypothesized that these rounds were too expensive to assemble and not as fun to shoot.
“There are very few people who shoot big cards. And the price goes into other people when you receive weapons," he said. But what about the .224 Valkyrie? Swerczek pointed out that smaller bullets are easier to manufacture in larger ones, and the market for the Valkyrie is small compared to the .223 Rem.
"I think the number of shooters that will buy [the .224 Valkyrie] is less than the .223. They're buying a lot of Valkyrie weapons, but the number of shooters is much lower," he said.
Ammo 4 Patriots
No matter what card you're looking for, the best way to find a reasonable price is patience, and quick typing. Brownells website offers an "Alert Me When Available" option, as do other major retailers. Setting those alerts and jumping on those opportunities can pay off, and hunters should start looking for the ammunition they need for the fall hunting season.
There are weapons out there, and manufacturers are doing everything they can to keep up with the demand. Eventually, scarcity will end. Until then, high prices and empty warehouses are just a fact of life.
