350 Legend Handgun - Review: Magnum Research BFR 350 Legend Over the years, Magnum Research has expanded its BFR chambering options to include a wide range of rifle and big rifle options in short and long cylinder configurations.

Single action revolvers may seem like a staple from our shooting history. Some may consider it a relic of the 19th century, producing only the nostalgia and excitement enjoyed by the Single Action Shooting Association's weekend competitions. But two decades ago, Magnum Research, Inc. realized that this solid, reliable and accurate design had the potential to grow beyond its Old West roots.

Big Frame Revolver is the BFR acronym used by Magnum Research to name its series of single-action revolvers, which began in the 1990s as a concept pistol developed by a company called D-Max. Using the Ruger Blackhawk as a starting point, the goal was to produce a single-action revolver with a longer frame and enlarged cylinder chamber for rifle cartridges.

Legend Vs 223

In 2000, Magnum Research bought the rights to the beefy D-Max revolver and moved the platform into production with a slight modification. Over the years, the company has continued to expand BFR chambering options to include a variety of rifle and large bore pistol options in short and long cylinder configurations.

The BFR's elongated cylinder holds six of the frameless 350 Legend cartridges, spaced on counterbores in each chamber.

Winchester Ammunition released a new frameless straight wall rifle cartridge in 2019 called the 350 Legend; Its 2.25" overall length, relatively slim profile, and maximum mean pressure (MAP) of 55,000 p.s.i. make it ideal for long-cylinder, six-stroke BFRs. And Magnum Research has teamed up with distributor Bill Hicks & Company to offer an exclusive 7.5. " - and Chambered in the 10"-barrel 350 BFR Legend; this review takes a closer look at the 7.5" version.

It's important to note that Magnum Research doesn't just offer production-grade BFRs – although ready-to-ship models are available, every BFR is assembled, assembled and hand-tested right here in America. The stainless steel components are made from five different stainless alloys to ensure that each part is properly hardened to withstand the rigors of firing high-pressure cartridges.

The ejector rod quickly removes most cases from the BFR's long cylinders, although some require the assistance of a cleaning rod.

The barrel is grippy, rifling accurate and has a deep crown. The rate of revolution of the gun and the height of the front blade are adjusted according to the chamber of the gun. Barrel-to-cylinder alignment is held to 0.002" concentricity for improved accuracy.

The company uses a proprietary sizing process to ensure that the receiver, grip frame and cylinder are all perfectly assembled. Only the receiver is subjected to a 70-point test to confirm that it is ready for use. A special allen head frame screw is used to prevent the gun from shaking during recoil.

The BFR is equipped with a free-wheeling cylinder to allow the shooter to rotate the cylinder clockwise or counterclockwise when loading a new cartridge or removing a spent cartridge. This is a very useful feature for handling stuck brass. BFR Slim Hammer spurs are grooved for better purchase. A transfer bar safety is also attached to the hammer to ensure that the revolver will not fire without cocking the hammer and pulling the trigger. This BFR ships with a silver-satin stainless steel finish, rounded profile barrel, 5.25" stainless steel ejector housing, and non-fluted cylinder.

The BFR's fully adjustable rear sight (left) and fixed blade front sight (right) allow for precise aiming, and the included base allows for scope attachment.

For testing, the rear sight was swapped to the 5.5" long one-piece aluminum base shipped with the revolver to mount the pistol's hunting scope. The "plow section" grip frame arrived wrapped in comfortable Hogue Monogrip rubber. The single-action trigger broke cleanly at 2 pounds of pressure, at 12 oz.

Some used case saw loads from the Winchester 145 grain full metal jacket resist removal with the ejector rod. It is necessary to knock these cases out of the chamber with a cleaning rod. A pair of Winchester 150 grain Mann Seasons is also hard to come by. However, Winchester's 160-grain Power Max bonded hollow-point brass and 180-grain Power Shock Federal Premium soft-point hunting were easily removed without any problems.

This is a good reminder of the importance of checking hunting weights before going into the field. Recoil feel is stout, but manageable by trying all loads. A formal accuracy test at 25 yards scored five shot groups ranging from 1.56" to 2.32". Some informal group shots at 50 yards got about 3 inches.

Straight Wall Face Off

A cartridge designed to be rifled through a 7.5-inch revolver results in a significant reduction in ballistic performance. Compared to the muzzle velocity and energy numbers listed by the manufacturer, the tested 350 Legend load lost between 252 and 366 fps. Velocity and bullet drop are similar. Down to between 417 and 531 ft.-lbs of energy, however, the revolver still produces between 1,228 and 1,385 ft.-lbs of energy at the muzzle — more energy than the .44 Mag, but not nearly as powerful. .454 Casul .

The 350 Legend is only a few years old, but it has enjoyed great success for a new cartridge, especially in states that mandate straight-wall hunting cartridges, and a wide range of rifles and cartridges already on the market. While a wheelgun chambering a shotgun cartridge isn't for everyone, the Magnum Research BFR lives up to its name, in this case, integrating an impressive chambering into a compact and attractive new platform.

NovX Ammunition made a big splash with the 2018 debut of the Engagement: Extreme load. Now it's keeping that momentum going with its new Pentagon line. So, what is the NovX formula for success?

Like its predecessors, chambered in .500 S&W Magnum and .460 S&W Magnum, respectively, Smith & Wesson's Model 350 revolver owes its name to its caliber, built to fire the mighty .350 Legend — a straight-walled, rebated rim hunter. Winchester cartridges were introduced in 2019 as the world's fastest straight-wall cartridge, effective for hunting deer out to 230 meters (about 250 yards).

The .350 Legend caliber is considered compliant with hunting laws in effect in several US states that prohibit the use of bottled cartridges and is compatible with the popular AR-15 semi-automatic rifle platform: the .350 Legend round will easily accommodate it. The STANAG 4179 magazine undoubtedly played no small part in the wild success the .350 Legend enjoyed in the US market.

The Smith & Wesson Model 350 double-action revolver was created primarily for hunting purposes (primarily for the US market and jurisdictions where handgun hunting is legal), but its design, special features, and performance levels certainly make it a must-have. Intended for collectors, gun enthusiasts in general and sports enthusiasts in particular
